Michael Stone

Michael Stone is a psychotherapist, author and yoga teacher, teaching in yoga studios, conferences and universities internationally. He is the author of the forthcoming “The Inner Tradition Yoga” (Shambhala 2008) and leads Centre of Gravity Sangha, a community of Yoga & Buddhist practitioners in Toronto. He is a long time student of Richard Freeman and is well-known for combining the various traditions of Krishnamacharya (Ashtanga, Iyengar, etc) in a thoughtful and accessible way. His workshops focus on giving students the teachings and techniques necessary for cultivating personal practice both on and off the yoga mat by providing detailed instruction in breathing and posture practices and approaching yoga philosophy and psychology in creative ways.

The weekend workshop at Sahayoga is a rare opportunity to alternate between practice and study. The course is designed to focus indepth on the techniques of form and attitude that make yoga postures produce their fruit. Classes will look at standing sequences, sitting postures and inversions in a detailed, flowing and methodical way.

With his strong background in both practice, academic scholarship and clinical practice as a psychotherapist, Michael will offer thought-provoking yet accessible lectures on various components of yoga philosophy. Expect time for chanting, discussion and debate.

Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced teacher, this workshop promises to offer a unique integration of the many dimensions of yoga rarely taught in an interconnected way. Yoga does not deepen by simply adding more and more spectacular postures but rather by tuning into the workings of relationship between mind and body and learning how to use yoga postures as a tool of meditation. From there we can create an authentic spiritual practice that helps us remove the physical and mental habits that keep us from genuine freedom.

Richard Freeman says: “Michael has the ability to teach and articulate aspects of yoga rarely taught or understood. A great gift.”

Robert Thurman says: “Michael leads a new wave of yoga teachers who practice not only backbends and headstands but can truly delve into the complexity of yoga philosophy and healing techniques without being simplistic or caught up in the mainstream.”
